TIRUCHIRAPPALLI:   Alleging that some people were trying to scuttle the Sethusamudram Shipping Channel Project, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today requested the Centre to take it up and complete the project as early as possible.

"Some people are putting the blame on Lord Ram and trying to bury the SSCP, a dream project of former Chief Minister C N Annadurai. The fate of the project is now in the court," he said at a meeting here after unveiling the statue of popular DMK leader Anbil Dharmalingam.

Work on the project was stalled as the Supreme Court had earlier reserved orders on the project and appointed an expert Committee headed by noted environmentalist R K Pachauri.

KOCHI:   The Kerala High court today stayed the judgement of a single judge that permitted once a week draw of Bhutan and Sikkim lotteries in the state.

The interim order was issued by a division bench comprising Justices Thothathil B Radhakrishnan and P Bhavadasan while hearing a writ appeal by the state government challenging the single judge's direction.

Megha Distributors had also filed appeal against the restriction of draws to once a week. The appeals have not been disposed off.

BENGALURU:   The Karnataka High Court today reserved its orders on a petition by former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, challenging the trial court order rejecting her plea for fresh translation of documents from Tamil to English in a disproportionate assets case.

Special Public Prosecutor B V Acharya in his arguments contended that trial should go on without prejudice to any person.

Justice Subhash Adi intervened to observe "in fairness of the trial, there has to be correct and proper translation. There must be an opportunity to the accused to point out the mistakes".

BENGALURU:   The Karnataka High Court today directed the government and owners of iron ore mines to arrive at a consensus on the contentious issue of extending validity of transport permits as both stuck to their original stands.

While mine owners have been pressing for extending the existing seven-day period validity to 12, the state is firm on not accepting it.

The suggestion by a division bench, headed by Chief Justice K S Khehar, that it be extended up to nine days, which the government accepted, was rejected by the mine owners.

BENGALURU:   Three days after he was accused of sexual harassment by his domestic help, eminent violinist L. Subramaniam said he would take legal action and that she was trying to 'divert attention' from a theft case.

'The maid has issued a false complaint against me to divert the attention from the case of theft. I intend to take legal action against all those who are trying to spread these baseless allegations,' Subramaniam said in a statement from his home here Tuesday night.

Subramaniam, who is married to Bollywood playback singer Kavita Krishnamurthy, had Sep 2 filed a complaint of theft at his home against the maid, who used to do household chores, at the Sanjayanagar Police Station in Bangalore. He accused her of stealing cash and valuables worth Rs.6 lakh.
