NEW YORK:   Ace Indian Leander Paes and his Zimbabwean partner Cara Black suffered a straight-set defeat against Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Mark Knowles to bow out of the mixed doubles category of the US Open tennis tournament here today.

Second seeds Paes and Black, who won the 2010 Wimbledon mixed doubles title, lost 3-6 4-6 to the German-Bahamian pair in the quarterfinal.

NEW YORK:   Rafa Nadal will lead the Spanish Armada into the fourth round of the U.S. Open on Tuesday as he continues his bid to capture the only grand slam to have eluded him.

Spain have strength in numbers and are already assured of having at least one men's semi-finalist after filling all four remaining spots in the top quarter of the draw.

NEW YORK:   Roger Federer brushed aside Austrian Jurgen Melzer in straight sets Monday to set up a revenge match against Sweden's Robin Soderling in the quarter-finals of the U.S. Open.

Five-time U.S. Open winner Federer dismissed Melzer 6-3 7-6 6-3, taking the second-set tiebreaker by 7-4, as he extended his record by reaching a 26th consecutive grand slam quarter-final.

NEW YORK:   Caroline Wozniacki lived up to her top-seed status at the US Open on Monday by defeating former champion Maria Sharapova in a fourth-round blockbuster.

Billed as the Battle of the Blondes, the 20-year-old Dane won through 6-3, 6-4, but not before a fired-up Sharapova had brought out the best in her.

NEW YORK:   Serbian third seed Novak Djokovic advanced to a US Open quarter-final against revenge-minded Frenchman Gael Monfils on Monday by defeating US 19th seed Mardy Fish 6-3, 6-4, 6-1.

Saying he is playing his best tennis of the year and gaining confidence while improving with every match, Djokovic moved one victory from a fourth consecutive trip to the semi-finals on the Flushing Meadows hardcourts.

NEW YORK:   Former U.S. Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova hit out at tournament organisers on Monday after she was beaten in the fourth round by unseeded Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova, the lowest ranked player left in the women's draw.

Kuznetsova, who won the title in 2004 and was runner-up in 2007, attributed her 7-5 7-6 loss to the scheduling, saying it was unfair that she had to meet Cibulkova in Monday's first centre court match after playing the late night feature on Saturday night.

NEW YORK:   Patrick McEnroe  will step down as captain of the US Davis Cup team after next week's world group playoff tie at Colombia and retired US star Jim Courier has thrown his hat into the ring to replace him.

McEnroe, the longest tenured captain in US Davis Cup history, will guide the Americans in Bogota on September 17-19 before his resignation takes effect, ending a decade in charge of the team that won a record 32nd Cup title in 2007.

NEW YORK:   Rafael Nadal swept into the last 16 at the US Open on Sunday, but Andy Murray's campaign came to a shuddering halt.

Top seed Nadal swept past Gilles Simon of France 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 as Spanish players dominated the top half of the draw, filling five out of eight places through into the fourth round.
